abstract = {It is a great honour and pleasure to welcome you to the Fifth IFIP Conference on Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT 2017) in Funchal, Portugal.
As a multidisciplinary conference devoted to enhance the sustainability of ICT and via ICT, SustainIT 2017 focuses on three main themes: 1) SUSTAINABLE INTERNET AND ICT, including novel standards and metrics for green communications, and the measurement and evaluation of the Internettextquoterights sustainability; 2) SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF ICT, including ICT for smart grids, smart water distribution systems, and ICT for energy efficiency in smart homes and buildings; and 3) HUMAN-CENTERED TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABILITY, including user evaluation of test-bed and prototype implementations, and human-factors in sustainable ICT systems.
SustainIT 2017 is intended to bring together people from different research areas, and provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers from both industry and academia.
This year we received 30 original research paper submissions, and 13 work-in-progress submissions. Each submission was subject to peer review by the members of the Technical Program Committee.
Each paper was reviewed by at least three expert reviewers, whereas each work-in-progress paper was reviewed by two expert reviewers. In the end, we selected 6 full papers and 6 short papers to be presented in four technical sessions, and 10 work-in-progress papers to be presented in a dedicated poster and demos session.
SustainIT 2017 also featured a PhD Forum, and two keynote lectures delivered by internationally renowned speakers. Professors Carla Gomes, from Cornell University, and António Câmara, from the New University of Lisbon. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the keynote speakers for their valuable contribution to the conference.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who worked so hard to make this conference a success. We sincerely thank all members of the Organizing Committee for their long term enthusiasm in organizing the conference, including WIP / Demo Co-Chairs, Anna Förster and Vlad Coroama; PhD Forum Co-Chairs, Marco Blumendorf, and Ricardo Lima; Creative and Artistic Interventions Co-Chairs, Mónica Mendes and Valentina Nisi; Publication Chair, Nuno Pereira; Local Organization Co-Chairs, Filipe Quintal and Mary Barreto; Image and Communications Chair, Sabrina Scuri; Student Volunteers Chair, Afonso Gonçalves, all the student volunteers, and World Travel for all their support to the realization of SustainIT 2017.
We are grateful to all members of the Technical Program Committee who offered their time and expertise to provide high-quality reviews.
Finally, we thank IFIP, including the Technical Committee 6, Working Group 6.3 Performance of Computer Communication Systems, and the IEEE Computer Society including IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Communications for their technical co-sponsorship.
Special thanks to the Madeira Promotion Bureau, Exictos and prsma for their financial sponsorship, as well as to Madeira Interactive Technology Institute, and Hotel Vidamar for hosting SustainIT 2017. },

The approach takes advantage of a combination of passive Wi-Fi tracking and ground truth data provided by tourism authorities. By analyzing a large dataset for a medium sized European island, we provide evidence of the accuracy and effectiveness of this low-cost method in inferring topological characteristics of tourist behavior and relevant typologies of trip itineraries. This helps decision makers in the touristic sector to plan and manage actions geared towards improving the sustainability and competitiveness of their touristic regions. In particular, we argue that in a world where sensing data is becoming inexpensive, there is an opportunity to use this approach to deliver data back to local communities which are empowered to act and leverage this information. },

That explains the application of ethnography design, in a broad way, to solve the issues of the vaccination system for children in Africa. We have derived the textquotedbllefttattoo of Africatextquotedblright concept from a design that reflects African cultural backgrounds and have linked it with the health service design process. Tattoos, which have been common in Africa for thousands of years, have been redefined as a new ritual for child health records. Our design is applied to two different artefacts: a baby guide book and a baby bracelet. We also describe our first prototype of the baby bracelet and its related App. The bracelet, which contains an NFC tag with information about the babytextquoterights vaccinations, can be read from or written to any NFC-enabled Android smartphone via the visual interface of the related App. },

Geo-Zombie aims at transforming the civic activity of contributing into a virtual gamified experience where players attempt to escape from horrific situations in which zombies are ready to cannibalize unsuspecting walkers. In some sense, walkers that kill zombies deeply reconnect with the concept of imminent danger which can be fought resorting to appropriate civic actions. To challenge our initial hypotheses we conducted a design process, starting with a concept generation where three different concepts were discussed which gave rise to five different multimedia mobile apps including the one with zombies. Then, focus group, experience prototyping, application design and implementation, and finally field trials were exploited to refine the design and to select the best apps out of the five that better responded to the need of involving common people in collecting urban accessibility data. It is worth noting that the experiences of use with 50 avid walkers have demonstrated that a multimedia mobile app with maps and zombies can be a concrete step towards a social inclusion strategy while inviting new reflections and discussions on the issue of urban data crowdsourcing. },

Presently, in the Information era, our cognitive capacities cannot simply rely on natural evolution to keep up with the immense advancements in the field of Ubiquitous technologies, which remain largely uninformed about our cognitive states. As a result, a so-called "cognitive gap" is forming between the human (users) and the machine (systems) preventing us from fully harnessing the benefits of modern technologies. We argue that a "cognitive information layer", placed in-between human and machine, could bridge that gap, informing the machine side about aspects of our cognition in real time (e.g., attention levels). In this position paper, we present our vision for such a software architecture, we describe how it could serve as a framework for designing and developing cognition-aware applications, and we showcase some application scenarios as a roadmap towards human-machine convergence and symbiosis. },

Building on selected contributions from the literature on infrastructuring in participatory design and publics, it proposes that digital platforms are artefacts that can help infrastructuring the formation of publics and study their biography.
