Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private university in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, that is home to seven colleges and over 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students. CMU’s faculty is award winning and renowned for working closely with students to solve major scientific, technological and societal challenges puts a strong emphasis on creating things – from art to robots. The CMU Portugal Program was fostered in Portugal through the agreement for international cooperation in science, technology and higher education between Fundação para Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

The Universidade de Aveiro (UA) created in 1973, is one of the youngest universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, UA carries on the mission to provide world class undergraduate and postgraduate education, support research and promote cooperation with society.

Attended by about 15,000 students on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the Universidade de Aveiro has already achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal.

Partnership with Carnegie Mellon

The Universidade de Aveiro offers two dual-degree Ph.D. programs in partnership with Carnegie Mellon:

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) with Carnegie Mellon’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering;

Computer Science with Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science.

The Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (CLSBE) is a private University in Lisbon and one of the most prominent Business & Economics Schools in Europe, ranked 26th in the Financial Times Top European Business Schools ranking. This position was achieved by combining world-class students and Faculty, strong and diverse academic programs, innovative learning initiatives, unique partnerships with the most prestigious international schools such as Carnegie Mellon, and a close relationship with the business world.

The Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics offers two dual-degree Ph.D. programs in partnership with Carnegie Mellon:-

– Technical Change and Innovation with Carnegie Mellon’s Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Technological Change program;

– Technology Management and Policy with Carnegie Mellon’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy.

Located in the center of Portugal, the Universidade de Coimbra is a public university and one of the oldest universities in the world. It is home to eight colleges (or “faculties”), including LettersLawMedicineSciences and TechnologyPharmacyEconomicsPsychology and Education Sciences, and Sports Sciences and Physical Education.

The Universidade de Coimbra partners with Carnegie Mellon’s to offer a dual-degree Masters Program:

Masters of Software Engineering program (MSE) with the Carnegie Mellon´s School of Computer Science.

The Universidade de Lisboa (UL) campus was founded in 1911 as a public University. CMU Portugal Dual Programs are housed at Faculdade de Ciências (FCUL) and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) .

Together with Carnegie Mellon University, Universidade de Lisboa offers dual-degree doctoral programs in six disciplines :

The Universidade da Madeira is located in Funchal, Madeira’s Island capital, about 700 km off the west coast of Morocco. Along with the Azores, Madeira is one of two autonomous Regions of Portugal. The island university attracts students from all over the island, as well as an increasing population from mainland Portugal and abroad.

In 2007, Madeira’s Mathematics and Engineering Department, along with Carnegie Mellon’s  established a dual-degree Master’s program:

– Human-Computer Interaction program with Carnegie Mellon’s HCII – Human Computer Interaction Institute

In the program, students study Computer Science, Design, Psychology, and Social and Decision Sciences. Students enrolled in the partnership program study in Madeira and at Carnegie Mellon’s Pittsburgh campus, earning master’s degrees from both universities

Located in northern Portugal, the Universidade do Minho (UMinho) is well renowned for its strong relationship with the surrounding Minho region, a center of entrepreneurial activity. Located in the north of Portugal, the University has a campus in Braga and two others in Guimarães, Azurém Campus and Couros Campus.

The Universidade do Minho offers a dual degree PhD programs in partnership with Carnegie Mellon:

Computer Science with Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science.

In this joint PhD program, students’ areas of research can cover a wide range of topics and development activities, from theoretical and fundamental aspects to the experimental and applied areas of Computer Science.

The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Nova) was founded in 1973 and is the youngest of Lisbon’s three state Universities. Nova is not confined to a single campus: it has five faculties and four university institutes that are located in and around Lisbon and this decentralized nature has given its faculties and institutes a great deal of autonomy. The university is now home to 46 different scientific research centers, 40 of which are financed by Portugal’s Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).
