abstract = {<p>Bacterial bioreporters are limited in their abilities to detect large polar molecules due to their membrane selectivity. In this study, the activity of serum complement was used to bypass this undesired selectivity. Initially, the serum complement activity was assessed using the responses of a bacterial bioreporter harboring a recA::luxCDABE transcriptional fusion when exposed to the chemotherapy drug, mitomycin C (MMC). Using 50 °C-treated serum, the limit of detection for this bacterial sensor was lowered by nearly 450-fold, from 31 μg/L to 0.07 μg/L MMC. Real-time quantitative PCR demonstrated that serum-treated cultures responded more strongly to 100 μg/L MMC, with 3.1-fold higher recA expression levels. Subsequent experiments with other bioreporter strains also found enhanced sensitivities and responses. Finally, combining each of the above findings, tests were performed to demonstrate the potential application of the recA::luxCDABE bioreporter within a lab-on-a-CD platform as a point-of-care diagnostic to measure chemotherapeutic drug concentrations within blood.</p>},

abstract = {<p>Artificial neural networks (ANN) are currently an additional tool which the engineer can use for a variety of purposes. Classification and regression are the most common tasks; however, control, modeling, prediction and forecasting are common tasks as well. For over three decades, the field of ANN has been the center of intense research. As a result, one of the outcomes has been the development of a large set of software tools used to train these kinds of networks, making the selection of an adequate tool difficult for a new user. This paper aims to help the ANN user choose the most appropriate tool for its application by providing a large survey of the solutions available, as well as listing and explaining their characteristics and terms of use. The paper limits itself to focusing on the tools which were developed for ANN and the relevant characteristics of these tools, such as the operating systems, hardware requirements, license types, architectures and algorithms available.</p>},

abstract = {Human work interaction design is an emerging discipline that aims to encourage empirical studies and conceptualizations of the interaction among humans, their variegated social contexts and the technology they use both within and across these contexts. In this paper the authors present a virtual reality system for visualization, navigation and reviewing of 3D CAD models within the oil industry domain. This system combines a large-screen interaction environment with remote mobile devices, thus allowing engineers in the field and teams in a control center to work in collaboration. To navigate through models the system uses the mobile devicetextquoterights camera and inertial sensors and takes advantage of recent natural interaction techniques on large-screen environments. The authors describe and elaborate around the usage of different work analysis methods in this complex, real world work domain. The analysis is based on (i) input from experts in the oil platform engineering field, (ii) previous and related work and (iii) application of different methods considering the recent advances in technology. The authors conclude that hierarchical task analysis was not effective in obtaining a clear, common vision about the work domain. Storyboarding was the most useful technique as it promoted the discovery of novelty factors that differentiate the solution, while simultaneously supporting the human work at offshore engineering design and review sessions.},
