Tools to analyse trends in tourism and marketingcomplemented with transmedia experience

Beanstalk is a multidisciplinary project team created at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute in partnership with the Associação de Promoção da Madeira (AP Madeira). Our goal is to design and deliver a product to the board of the Tourism of Madeira that allows them to analyse trends in tourism and marketing – have a better understanding of what both locals and tourists visit, how and when – and further complement this with a transmedia experience that can potentially stimulate the local economy. This project is divided into two components – the first focuses on creating a platform where it is possible to keep track of the flow of people in Madeira. The second component involves developing a location-based storytelling experience using everyday mobile devices that capitalise on previously collected data.

Summary

The Beanstalk project team was formed at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute in collaboration with the Associação de Promoção da Madeira (AP Madeira). They aimed to create a product for the Tourism Board of Madeira that could analyse trends in tourism and marketing. This would help them understand why locals and tourists visit, how and when they visit, and how to boost the local economy through transmedia experiences. The project was divided into two components. The first component focused on creating a platform to keep track of people’s movement in Madeira. The second component involved developing a location-based storytelling experience using everyday mobile devices. This storytelling experience would capitalise on the previously collected data to give tourists and locals a more immersive experience. The project team successfully designed and delivered the product to the board of the Tourism of Madeira. The platform they created allowed the board to analyse tourism trends and marketing more detailedly, which helped them make better decisions. The location-based storytelling experience was also developed and implemented using everyday mobile devices. Overall, the project successfully achieved its goal of stimulating the local economy through transmedia experiences.
